The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to efforts to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.

The bans were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
